How to belong

We detached ourselves from the forest

and invented loneliness to pass the time.

All the crumbs we left on the path

have been eaten away by the birds.

They sing familiar songs calling us home now

while we make ourselves too busy to listen.

And with every passing minute

our sadness grows roots in foreign territory.

We forgot to belong to the dirt beneath our feet.

We forgot how to belong.
