Humanity

Humanity

Has humanity lost its humanity?
(asking for a friend)
If the question offends you
Your big feelings might be the problem

When did it become ok to dispose of people?
(checks history, has mini heart attack)
How was it ever ok to dispose of people?
(better question, same sentiment)

Our anthropocentric ways fooled us
Believing we're the smart animals
Walking around like we own this place
This womb we share with others

No other species is this self-destructive
This self-obsessed
This self-righteous
This cruel

We humans take the cake
We turn on each other for sport
Hurt people hurting people on repeat
Like we're not cut from the same cloth

Blood baths and heartbreaks
In the name of self-preservation
But don't ask for accountability
'Cause all you'll get is defensiveness

Slaves to our egos, we march on
Pointing fingers, making excuses
Running from the truth
And still hoping to be right

'Cause to be wrong is to be unlovable
(or so we seem to think)
So we double-down on mistakes
And adjust the narratives we tell

Denial and self-delusion
Buy us time, ulcers and headaches
When a simple "I'm sorry"
Could start us on a new path

Instead, we dispose of our brothers and sisters
Trying to tame our discomfort
We become islands of righteousness
Oceans away from belonging

Our walls become fortresses
Impenetrable to love and mutual understanding
Then our hearts harden and decay
Turning us into monsters

Can we save whatever humanity is left in humanity?
Or is it pointless to try?
Too idealistic perhaps?
(asking for myself)
